Stroke-order rules

Seven fundamental principles for writing Chinese characters in the correct order.

Back to strokes
1

先横后竖

Horizontal before vertical

When horizontal and vertical strokes cross, write the horizontal stroke first.

Examples: 十 土 干

2

先撇后捺

Left-fall before right-fall

When both left-falling and right-falling strokes appear, write the left-fall first.

Examples: 人 八 入

3

从上到下

Top to bottom

For top-bottom structures, write from top to bottom.

Examples: 三 字 菜

4

从左到右

Left to right

For left-right structures, write from left to right.

Examples: 林 明 打

5

先外后内

Outside before inside

For partially enclosed characters, write the outer frame before the inside.

Examples: 月 同 凶

6

先进入后封口

Enter before closing

For fully enclosed characters, fill the inside before closing the frame.

Examples: 田 日 回

7

先中间后两边

Center before sides

For symmetric characters, write the center stroke(s) before the sides.

Examples: 小 水 承
